FRICTION IN BERLIN

LONDON, October 3. Major-General Kotikov, Russian commandant in Berlin, rejected the month-old request by the Berlin City Assembly for a guarantee of protection in the Russian sector. He told the president of the Assembly to apply to the Russian sector German police. The president had pointed out in a letter that these police had made no attempt to prevent Communist disturbances during previous meetings of the Assembly. The British control officer in Berlin’s air safety centre lodged a strong verbal protest with the Russian control officer after Russian Yak lighters had “buzzed” a British air-lift plane. Russian aircraft on Wednesday night engaged in formation manoeuvres over Berlin. The American-control-led radio in Berlin, which sends out a guiding beam for air-lift pilots when necessary, was jammed yesterday. The directoi’ of the station said that he could not tell whether the jamming was intentional.
