Labour Majority In Scottish By-election

COMMUNIST POLLS OVER 4200 LONDON, October 3. The Labour Party retained its seat in the by-election for the Gorbals division of Glasgow with a majority of 6525 votes. The figures were: — Mrs Alice Cullen .. 13,706 Willis Roxburgh “ (Conservative) ...• '■ 7,181 Peter Kerrigan (Communist) 4.233 Reuter’s diplomatic correspondent says that although the Labour majority is less than half that gained by Labour’s candidate, Mr George Buchanan in 1945, the Government supporters should be satisfied with the result.

The polling at the 1945 election resulted:—

George Buchanan (Labour) 21,073 Lt. IL. A. McTaggart (Cons.) 5,269

There was no Communist candidate.
