HOKITIKA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, October 1.
Mr. A. C. Cutbush of Wellington, arrived in Hokitika on Thursday evening to spend .a few weeks’ holiday. The Darfield rugby football team will arrive here to-morrow and will play a match with Kokatahi at Kokatahi over the week-end. The team will be staying at Hotel Empire.
WHITEBAIT SEASON: Two prominent fishermen recently gave their positive decisions against a good whiteoait season. One said that the inanga were conspicuous by their absence, whereas in the previous year large shoals travelled upstream during January, February and March. The second fisherman said he based his prediction on the weather prevailing during the spawning season, and maintained that the condition of the whitebait at present being caught was not up to the usual high standard oi a flush season. CRICKET:
Cricketers were busy last week-end repairing the cricket pitch at Cass Square, and levelling out the area surrounding the pitch. The pitch was reset with new clay, and should be in good order for the opening matches. KIWI FILM SHOWN:
The screening of the 16 m.m. film of the Kiwis’ tour through England and France attracted wide interest on Wednesday evening. Miss Ramsay of the Westland Hospital, screened the film for the Hokitika Rugby League Club, and there was a large attendance. WEATHER CONDITIONS:
Following days of stormy and wintry conditions, the weather brightened to-day, and the sun broke through the clouds. The morning was fine and clear with a cold atmosphere. During the afternoon the conditions again became very wintry with a cold southwest wind blowing. The mountains present a charming sight with a very heavy mantle of fresh snow.
