Employer Members Walk Out of British Steel Board

(Rec 10.0) LONDON October 1. The five employer members of the Iron and Steel Board, appointed by the Ministry of Supply two years ago to supervise the industry’s price policy and reconstruction programme, have resigned because they disagree with the Government’s nationalisation policy. Other employers were invited to fill their places, but they have aeclined for the same reason, according to the Daily Telegraph. The Daily Herald accuses the resignees of “walking out for political reasons.” It adds, “they accepted the job knowing that the Government was pledged to nationalise iron and steel. Possibly they had hoped the Government would change its mind, but it must now be clear to them as to the rest of the country, that Labour keeps is pledges.” The Daily Mail says the board is to be dissolved, and its functions carried on directly by the Ministry of Supply.
