WELLINGTON, Sept. 30.

“Eight officer-cadetships in the R.N.Z.N. for entry early in 1949 are being offered,” said the Minister of Defence, Hon. Candidates for the entrance examination to be held at the end of the present year must be between 17 years and 18 years 8 months on May 1, 1949, and must have passed the University Entrance or School Certificate examination. “Those selected will be sent to Britain at the Government’s expense for a year’s training, followed by three years’ further training in the Royal Navy in the ranks of midshipman and sub-lieutenant. Officers will then return to New Zealand for permanent service in the R.N.Z.N. Applications for the cadetship will close on October 15 with the Naval Secretary, Wellington.” Early in 1949 cadetships will be introduced in the electrical branch of the R.N.Z.N. The training will include a year’s cadetship in R.N.Z.N. ships followed by a three years’, degree course at Canterbury University College and then training at naval electrical schools and establishments in Britain.
