MELBOURNE, Sept 20.
The Victorian Council of the Australian Legion of Ex-Servicemen and Women has decided to follow the lead of the New South Wales branch of the legion by .expelling all Communists and fellow travellers. Acting on legal advice, the- council will instruct its sub-branches to take immediate action.
< ‘T'he gloves are now. off,” said the acting State president (Mr Lee Elliott). “Members of the council are fully aware of the tactics used by the Reds within sub-branches of th n legion. We are determined to tak~ whatever steps are necessary to rid the legion of these obstructionists.” I-Ie added that legal advisers had told him that Communists, as such, could not be expelled, but that under its articles of association, the legion could remove anyone who was considered by the State council to be guilty of conduct detrimental to the legion. The New South Wales State council.of the legion imposed its ban in July,. 1945, and has expelled 13 members s’nee then.
