WHEN MARSHALL AID ENDS!
JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 20
A bold British Commonwealth trade policy was needed to deal with the situation which wouicl arisb when Marshall Aid ended, said Lord Balfour of Inchyre, speaking at the sixteenth congress of the British Empire Chambers of Commerce, of which he is president. i
Me added: “There are no solid indications that by the time Marshall Aid is exhausted the ■ dollar gap will have been bridged permanently or even temporarily. Sooner or later, the people of Britain will have to face the consequences of this grim position.” The South African Minister for the Interior, Dr. T. E. Donges, said that world-wide trade agreements, like that drawn up at Havana this year, were not sufficient answer to trade problems. Limited trade agreements were more practical in present conditions. The Empire agreement signed at Ottawa in 1932 was one of the most successful of such limited agreements.
The Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Mackenzie-King, stated that in seeking to promote trade between the Commonwealth countries the congress was also contributing to the general world economic recovery.
