First Week’s Wages and Sickness Benefit
WELLINGTON, Sept. 21.
Important advice from the Minister of Finance, the Rt. Hon. W. Nash, relating to the wages for employees who are ill for more than a week has been communicated by the national executive of the New Zealand Federation of Labour to district trades councils throughout the Dominion.
‘‘The question of the practice of the Societ Security Department in circumstances where the employer pays the first week’s wages of an employee who is off sick was the subject of a communication from Mr Nash at a meeting of the national executive on September 1. Mr Nash stated that in such circumstances the Social Security Department accepts the responsibility for the second and following weeks, which, in effect, means that if a stand-down period of seven days is provided for through the action of the employer there is no period for which the employee is not in receipt of any income,” states the federation’s circular.
