Boys’ Tournament

Buller Boxing Association held an amateur tournament at Granity on Friday night, and put through 21 bouts- without a hitch. Messrs T. Phibbs and N. Comerford refereed the bouts and Mr. H. McKeown was announcer. Abbreviations are: —G. Granity; W. Westport; S. Seddonville; B. Birchfield; M. Millerton; N. Ngakawau; St. Stockton. The Humphries Cup for the most scientific boxer was won by R. Easton (Granity). The other winners received cups and medals and the runners-up received trophies. The y ntests were of three rounds and resulted as follows:— J. Williams (G.) (3st. 21b.) drew with K. Geddies (St.) (3st. 21b.) Throughout three rounds the boys never let up and they got a great hand fro/n the crowd. R Woods (M.'i (3st. 41b.) lost to B. Gilmore (G.) (3st. 31b.) Woods went right in after his man, and they stood toe to toe and fired everything at one another. There was not much between these lads. B. Hansen (GJ 3st. 91b.) beat C. Eagle (S.) (3st. 81b.) These boys were game, but made a lot of wild swings. R. Easton (G.) (4st. Gib.) beat L. Forman (S.) (4st. 91b.). This was a good bout, Easton proving the better. Forman was inclined to stand off and let Easton do the leading and took some hard punches. T. Berry (St.) )4st. 61b.) drew with R. Walsh (N.) (4st. 91b.) Berry never took his eyes off his opponent and Was connecting with lefts and rights, but Walsh had a good guard and fought back. C. Krammer (S.) (4st. 71b.) beat L. Adank (W.) (4st. 71b.) Krammer was making the fight ,but Adank took most of his punches on the gloves. In the second and third rounds both connected with lefts and rights and put up a good showing. F. Swainson (S.) (4st. 71b.) beat K. Fleming (N.) (4st. 71b.). They did a lot of sparring until Swainson connected with a nice left and then fireworks started> They threw in everything. Swainson deserved the verdict.

H. Berry (S.) (sst. 81b.) lost to S. Mathewson (W.)! (sst. 91b.)._ Mathewson was the taller. Both missed a lot until they settled down. Mathewson connected with straight lefts. In the last round they were exchanging rights and lefts freely. J. Fisher (N.) (sst. 31b.) beat W. Woodhead (sst. 31b.). Fisher let fly with a straight left. Woodhead came out of it well, and the last round it was toe to toe. Fisher got a good hand from the crowd. N. Walsh (N.) (sst. 121 b.) lost to M. Easton (G.) (sst. 131 b.). Easton connected with lefts and rights in the first round, but Walsh was tough and kept blocking and making his opponent miss. The last round was good. Easton won by a small margin. W. Joynes (G.) (sst.) beat W. McMillan (S.) (4st. 131 b.) There was not much difference between these boys. Joynes proved himself the stronger. B. Cummings (B.) (sst.) beat G. Boswell (M.) (4st. 131 b.) The bout did not go very far before the referee awarded it to "Cummings. J. Smith (G.) (4st. 11b.) drew with A. Taylor (W.) (4st.). They mixed it well, with wild swings and uppercuts.

A. Cummings (B.) (sst. 31b.) lost to J. Judge (W.) (sst. 31b.). Judge connected with straight lefts. Cummings hit hard and appeared to be doing the better, .but Judge got the decision.

J. Cummings (B.) (sst. 61b.) beat R. Coleman (S.) (sst. 121 b.), and never left it in doubt. Coleman could not keep his feet. Cummings made the fight. R. Collins (G.) (sst. 81b.) beat J. Dawes (N.) (sst. 81b.). They stood toe to toe, exchanging blows, but Dawes gave in. T. Jack (B.) (sst. 61b.) beat D. Parks (S.) (sst. 61b.). Jack went after Parks and with lefts and rights easily won. D. Jack (B.) (6st. 41b.) beat T. Philip (S.) (6st.), making the fight in the first round. In the second round, Philip retaliated, and the last round was even.

P. Keepin (M.) (6st. 71b.) beat J. Anderson (S.) (6st. 81b.) in a good fight, which Keepin made. J. Cunniffe (M.) (Bst. 21b.) drew with B. Anderson (S.) (Bst.). Anderson connected with straight lefts to Cunniffe’s head. Both stood in and connected with both hands.

M. Byrne (G.) (lOst. 121 b.) beat L. Warren (W.) (lOst. 81b.). Warren connected with straight lefts and Byrne with lefts and rights. They stood toe to toe, Byrne using his weight. Warren slipped and fell through the ropes just as the gong went. In the second round they were fighting in close and both fell. Warren stayed on one knee for a count of nine. In the last round they were all out to knock one another and with a beautiful right cross Byrne floored Warren. The referee started to count but Warren was game and got up to carry on to the finish. An exhibition bout of four rounds by Allen (lOst. 51b.) and Doug. Kitto (lOst. 81b.) put up a good show and was greatly appreciated by the spectators.
