Canada Purchases 3000 Tons of Butter
P.A. WELLINGTON, Sept 20. The reason for Canada’s purchase of 1000 tons, of butter from New Zealand and 3000 tons from Denmark was because Canada was 14,000,0001 b short of her own requirement, said the Canadian commercial secretary, Mr P. V. Lane, to-day. The purchases would be about a little more than half of .what Canada required. Canada was still negotiating with Australia for an additional • supply, said Mr Lane, but there had been no success there, so far. New Zealand butter had always been well regarded by Canadians, added Mr Lane, and they would like more of it if they could obtain it. In past years, fit had been bought seasonally to supplement the local supplies The quantity that would go to i Canada was the most that. Zealand, in view of her commitments to Great Britain, could possibly release. Canada’s shortage was due to the increased production of cheese, because cf the demand from Br-tain, and also, possibly, to lack of fodder.
