Mr J. Doyle leaves this morning for Wellington on business connected with the Federation of Labour.
A cable records the death at Lucerne, Switzerland, of M. Emil Ludwig, who was the author of many best-seller historical works.
The funeral of Mr Gardiner Davidson Wilson took place at Karoro Cemetery yesterday. The services at the church and the graveside were taken by the Rev. T. G. Campbell.
A Perth cable says: The man who claims to be a New Zealander, named Whitehead, gives his Christian names as Paul Raymond. Press correspondents report that the authorities in Perth regard his case as genuine. In the meantime, he has asked that papers be sent from New Zealand.
Mr E. R. Darracott, headmaster of the Blaketown School, will leave on October 7 to become headmaster at the Otautau School, Southland. His sucessor has not yet been named. The Canterbury Education Board has approved of the following 'staff changes at West Coast schools: Resignations, Misses N. Grant and E. F. O’Grady (Grey Main School), Mr E. R. Darracott (Blaketown). Appointments, Mrs M. C. W. Sharpe (Ross).
Princess Elizabeth is expecting her baby about the middle of November Buckingham Palace has announced that the birth of the baby will take place at Buckingham Palace because Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh still have not a home of their own. Presents for the baby, mostly hand-made clothes, have been pouring into the Palace from all parts of the 'Empire, but except in rare cases Princess Elizabeth only accepts presents from people she knows personally. .
On Saturday week last at Wairoa two former old West Coasters, Mr and Mrs Charles Riddiford, celebrated their golden wedding. Mr and Mrs Riddiford were married at Nelson Creek by the Rev. Mr Heron, who was then in charge of the Brunnerton area. After remaining in Blackball for 20 years, where five members of the family were born, they came to Hawke’s Bay, taking up residence at Wairoa, where they have lived for the past 30 years. Messrs Arthur and Ernest Riddiford, now deceased, were brothers of Mr Riddiford, they living at Ngahere for long terms, Ernest having been a keen trotting enthusiast, and running in partnership with Mr J. Donaldson, owned a number of horses at different periods. Members of the family and relatives from distant parts visited Wairoa for the occasion and a social function attended by a large number of Wairoa residents, including ex-Coasters, was arranged in honour of the celebrants, Mr V. Fraser acting as chairman. During the afternoon a lengthy toast list was honoured, interspersed with musical items appropriate to the occasion. Mr and Mrs Riddiford were the recipients of a large number of gifts and of messages of congratulation. Among the guests were Mesdames Sheriff and Veale (Hokitika). Mr and Mrs Gibson (Dobson), Mr and Mrs Whiting (Blackball), Mr and Mrs Clarke (the Hermitage and formerly of Kumara), Mrs Tiplady (Geraldin) and Mr and Mrs Ash (Hastings), all relatives of Mr and Mrs Riddiford.
