Rumania Has U.S. Officials Recalled for Use of Their Cameras
(Rec 10.0) WASHINGTON Sept 16.
Four members! of the American Legation staff in Bucharest have been recalled on the demand of the Rumanian Government, which had accused them of taking photographs in a forbidden zone. The United States State Department disclosed this* to-day and said that the United States had rejected the accusation and declared that the Rumanian Government’s complaints did not conform to facts. It was acknowledged that the four—two men and two women —had cameras, and had taken a total of seven pictures: of an oxcart and peasant;, a herd of water buffalo, and a native well. ' . r The United States, m a Note, accuses: the Rumanian police in the city of Giurmu, of having detained the four for 17 hours incommunicado, after the alleged incident, It said that for 16 hours, no member of the group had been allowed food or water.
