Elderly Woman Assaulted at Door

P.A. AUCKLAND, Sept. 17. Alone and in bed when she rose to answer a knock on her front door at eight o’clock last night, Miss Ellen Smith, aged 68, of New Lynn, was attacked and struck on the head with a bottle which broke into pieces. Before opening the door Miss Smith switched on the verandah light. Dazed by the blow but with minor injuries only, she went to a neighbour’s house after the assailant had departed. Within two hours detect.ves had arrested a suspect. In the Police Court to-day, Ramon Louis Letica, aged 19, a grocer’s assistant, was charged with assaulting Ellen Smith. On the application of the police the Magistrate, Mr. J. H. Luxford granted a remand until September 24.
