MILLION POUNDS FOR MODERN PLANES FOR NEW ZEALAND
AUCKLAND, Sept. 16. “The Government has set aside a fund of £1,000,000 for the purchase of modern aircraft,” said the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, when criticism of the Territorial Air Force plans were drawn to his attention today. The planes would be purchased when a decision had been made on the most suitable types for New Zealand’s needs.
He said the fund would be added to and expanded when experts had made a decision. The question of compensation for injury or death during flying training had not been fully considered, but it seemed obvious that the State would protect the interests of Air Force members in the same way as it did members of the other active services. Mr Jones admitted that the situation migth arise where an air-crew member with a private life insurance might arise where an air-crew memiums for nothing if the insurance companies refused to recognise liability in the case of service air crashes, but said he was unable to' say what, steps, if any, would be taken to meet the position.
