OBITUARY

MR WILLIAM PRENDERGAST Mr William Prendergast, of 30 Buccleugh Street, died in Greymouth yesterday, aged 78 years. He was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, and came to New Zealand as a youth. Mr Prendergast was employed at the Leviathan gold claim, South Beach, for some years, and was then 'an hotelkeeper at Cobden. He then .joined the gas department of the Greymouth Borough Council, and retired about 30 years ago. He is survived by three sons. James, John and William, of_Greymouth; one daughter, Miss Eileen Prendergast, of Greymouth, and a sister, Mrs J. Ryall, Barrytown. A motion of sympathy with the ' relatives, was carried at the Borough Council meeting last night. MR M. J. GRESSON A well-known legal man of Christchurch, Mr Maurice James Gresson, died on Wednesday, aged 63 years. He was known throughout the Dominion, and made several appearances before the Privy Council, and the Court of Appeal, Wellington. He was a grandson of the late Mr Justice Gresson, the first Judge appointed in Canterbury, and a brother of Mr Justice Gresson.

MRS E. C. HERBERT The death occurred recently of Mrs E. C. Herbert, of Ross, aged 81 years. Mrs Herbert came to Ross 34 years ago, and has been connected closely with St. Paul’s Church throughout the years until her long illness. During the 1918 influenza epidemic she reopened the Ross hospital, which had been closed for some years, and successfully nursed the Ross patients. She was the youngest daughter of the late Mr W. C. Fendall, who came to New Zealand in the George Seymour in 1850. Mrs Herbert is survived by a brother, Arthur, who was at one time secretary of the old Westland Education Board and later of Hokitika, and a daughter, Miss K. Herbert, of Ross. The service was conducted by a nephew, Archdeacon E. A. Osmers, and the Rev. K. Bathurst, Vicar of South Westland.
