NORTHERN MINERS’ UNION LEADERS TO TEST FEELING
AUCKLAND, Sept. 16. The president and secretary of the Northern Miners’ Union have resigned because of complaints about their handling of the recent dispute involving the Macdonald, • Glen Afton and Pukemiro mines.
The executive of the Northern Miners’ Union opposed the recent strike at the three mines. It claimed that, this attitude reflected the majority vote of the union, which favoured referring the dispute to one of the forms of arbitration available.
The action of the president, and secretary is stated to be to test union support. They are both offering themselves for re-election. A secret ballot for the positions will be held very soon. The situation was discussed at stop-work meetings of all the main Waikato mines yesterday. All began work about 9 a.m., except the Macdonald mine, which remained idle after a meeting lasting until fairly late in the morning.
