Soviet Suspects Designs of Western Powers on Italian Colonies
PARIS, September 14. The four-Power conference on former Italian colonies was resumed i this morning. M. Schuman was represented by M. Couvre de Murville, political chief of the French Foreign Office. M. Vyshinsky accused the Western Powers of designs on Italian coloniesRussia would agree only to all three colonies coming under an Italian mandate, he said. If no decision is reacned by tomorrow, the matter must, under the Italian Peace Treaty terms, be referred to the United Nations General Assembly. M. Vyshinsky proposed 'that 'the former Italian colonies should be placed under an administrator named by the United Nations Trustee Council, who would be assisted by a consultative council of seven United Nations members. The United States, Britain and French delegates would not accept this new Russian proposal. Discussion will be resumed tonight. NO AGREEMENT (Rec. 9.0) PARIS, Sept. 15. Four-Power talks on the future of the Italian colonies have failed, and the issue now goes to the United Nations, state Agency Press reports. The Drafting Committee will meet to-day to draw up a letter to the United Nations announcing the failure of the talks. Here there is likely to be disagreement. Western delegates want the letter to come from the Foreign Ministers’ Counsel, but M. Vyshinsky refuses, saying the meeting was not a Foreign Ministers’ Council, but only a conference of the four Powers. A British delegate said: “The point to be settled is in what form to hand the problem over to the United Nations, and we do not yet know the answer to this.”
