Canon From India Not Permitted To Preach in Auckland
AUCKLAND, Sept b. Though he was welcomed in Anglican dioceses of Wellington, Waiapu, and Nelson, and in Christchurch, Canon A. H. Jackson, who is visiting New Zealand on furlough ..from Inria, has been refused permission to preach in the Auckland diocese churches as a "missionary depurationist.” „ , Permission had been refused on the direction of the Bishop of Auck-1 land because there had been no understanding as to the. relevant standings of the Anglican Church and the new Church of South India, said Archdeacon Houghton, at Auckland. No action could be taken till the Bishop returned from the Lambeth Conference in London. Canon Jackson said that after njs arrival in New Zealand, correspondence passed between the Archbishop of New Zealand (Archbishop WestWatson), and Dr. G. F. Fisher, about his position. Canon Jackson told a reporter that Dr. Fisher had said his position was the same as that of any othei’ priest of the Anglican church provided certain conditions were fulfilled. The refusal of permission to preach in Auckland nas come in spite of his fulfilling these conditions. In his 12 years in South .India, he was concerned with the union of Anglicans, Methodists, Presbyterians, Congregationalists and a section of the Swiss Reformed Church into a Church of South India. It was the first time the episcopal Anglican Church had united with nonconformist churches.
