SIX MORE POLIO CASES IN WELLINGTON
WELLINGTON, Sept 7. Three further cases of poliomyelitis, a girl aged 12 and a boy aged four, from'Wellington city, and a g-rl aged seven from Lower Hutt, were reported to-day. LATER In all, six fresh cases of poliomyelitis, all children, were reported in the Wellington health district to-day. They were: A boy aged four; a boy aged two, and a girl aged 12, all from Wellington; and three girls, aged four, seven, and nine, from Hutt Valley. A total of 40 cases during the past 14 days have been reported in Wellington, and of these 18 have been school children. Eighteen have been reported from the Wellington central district, 20 from Hutt Valley, one from Wairarapa, and one from Plimmerton. New Method To j Check Polio. Infection
P.A. WELLINGTON, September 7. The Health Department will shortly announce a new approach to the problem of preventing the spread of golio infection, said the . Minister of [ealth, Hon. Miss M, B. Howard, answering an urgent question in the House of Representatives to-day. Mr C. M. Bowden (Nat) asked: Whether, in addition to the closing of. the schools to prevent children congregating, it was also intended to close the picture theatres to children. Miss Howard replied that it was proposed to keep the Wellington and the Hutt district schools closed for the present week only. Parents, she said, were expected to keep their children away from the picture theatres and other congregations during this time. “Another approach to the problem of preventing the spread of the poliomyelitis infection is proposed by my Department. This is being considered, and it is hoped to make an early announcement”, added Miss Hov-ard.
