United Nations Paris Assembly Preparations
PARIS, September 1. The United Nations took formal possession of a fraction °* territory on the banks of the Seine to-day as the seat of the third session of the General Assembly, which w°ll open on September 21 says the Associated Press correspondent. The French Premier, M. Robert Schuman gave the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Trygve Lie a symbolical golden key to the buildings and environs. . Mr. Lie declared: It is of the greatest importance to the United Nations and the world that the European nations should play a full and loyal part unceasingly in making the United Nations strong. M. Schuman said that Europeans had resigned themselves to the transfer elsewhere of the centre of gravity of world politics. They knew, however, that nothing lasting‘could be! built unless the gtovernments learns from past lessons. Reuter’s correspondent explains l that, as a result of the ceremony, 11 1 acres of western Paris, which is already being called “Unosia,” have I become a United Nations State. With-
in the State, the Frencr police will not have any jurisdiction and special passes are required to pass its iiontieits 4,200 inhabitants comprise 1,500 delegates, 1,500 secretarial members and 1,200 journalists. There will be seats also for 800 visitors. The State will have its own police, guards, fire brigade, anti-aircraft defences, banks, post offices, telephone exchange, radio station, and restaurants. The delegates’ seats will be equipped with radio sets with switcher permitting them to listen to the speeches in five languages.
