MAN ARRESTED IN GREYMOUTH SHOP ON THEFT CHARGE

A man walked into H. and J. Lamont’s, jewellers, in Mackay Street, yesterday afternoon, and asked to see some necklaces. He examined them, and while the attendant was engaged elsewhere, he vanished, taking with him, it is alleged, a necklace. A short time later, the same man returned to the shop, and again asked to see some necklaces. Sergeants Wootton and Hansen, however, were in the shop, and the man was promptly arrested. a He was later charged at Greymouth Police Station with theft, and with attempted theft, and will appear at the Police Court this morning.
