In the senior reserve Rugby League match at Blackball on Sunday, Peter Williams, 18, of Taylorville, suffered a fractured collar bone. He was attended by the St. John Ambulance Brigade, and later at the Grey Hospital.
Food coupons collected in Greymouth during the last two weeks in the Aid for Britain campaign totalled 1086. There were 1083 meat, and three butter coupons. The previous fortnight the figures were 734 and 14 respectively.
A wooden hostel for members of the Womens Auxiliary Army Corps at Hopu Hopu military camp, Ngaruawahia, was completely destroyed by fire on Sunday. Six W.A.A.C.s who lived in the hostel lost all their military gear and personal effects.
The third term at the primary schools in the Grey district began yesterday, except for Marist Bros, and Convent primary schools, which resume to-day. The Greymouth Technical High School will stjirt next Tuesday. Miss L. Bremner was replaced by Miss N. Grant at the Main School.

Sir K. Murdoch, Melbourne press magnate, visiting Auckland, said: “Supply of newsprint has become one of the dominant considerations in publishers’ minds”. As chairman of the Australian Newsprint Mills 1 he was making his visit to look at a forest in Rotorua district which might supply timber for the provision of pulp for newsprint. Australia was desperately short of newsprint, he said, and newspapers were now receiving less than 50 per cent, of their pre-war supply. Newsprint mills in Tasmania were supplying one-third of the amount used, but that amount was only one-third of what newspapers could use.
Judgment by default was entered by Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M., in in the following cases. —Schaef’s Ltd. v. W. T. Wearne, £6 Ils 4d and costs £1 11s 6d; Robert Francis, Ltd., v. S. J. Gillan, £34 15s, and costs £1 12s.
Albert James Ballinger and Ivan Charles Hanford, were each fined 10s and costs by Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M., in Greymouth Police Court yesterday for having ridden a bicycle without a light. For driving a motor car without due care and attention, Harold Blyth Webster was fined £2 and costs.

One man, who was found on licensed premises in Greymouth after hours and five who were found at Blackball, were each fined 10s and costs, by Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M., in the Greymouth Police Court yesterday.
Two men were sent to gaol and one was granted a suspended sentence by Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M., in Greymouth Police Court yesterday for having failed to pay maintenance. Sidney James Gillan was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment, and Ernest Ladbrook, three months. Geoffrey Lee was sentenced to one month suspended, provided he pays 10s a week off the arrears.
For having failed to furnish a return of income tax for 1947, Reginald Hall, miner, of Stillwater was fined £3 with £3 5s costs by Mr A. A. McLachlan. S.M., in the Greymouth Police Court yesterday.
Charles Edgar Joseph White, single labourer, pleaded guilty in Greymouth Police Court yesterday, before Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M., to a charge of stealing a bicycle in Christchurch, on February 25, valued at £l2. He was fined £3 and ordered to repay £5, obtained when he sold the machine. Detective Sergeant N. Thompson said that White, after stealing the bicycle, sold it the same day . for £5 He had been sentenced to two months in gaol in April for theft, but this was committed prior to the present charge. Mr McLachlan said that as White was showing signs of going straight, he would impose a fine.

Mrs Brereton presided over a good attendance of members at the September meeting of the Kotuku Women’s Institute. The aspirations were read by all members. An invitation t o be present at their birthday celebrations was received from Runanga and Cobden Institutes. It was 'decided to send the usual donation to the Leper Fund. The roll call, “A famous person I admire, and why,” was well responded to. Many beautiful articles were on display in the handwork competition, "Something made from six inches of felt,” which was won by Mrs J. Molloy, with Mrs Bell second. The vase of flowers resulted in a tie for first place between Mesdames W. Dalzell. J. Molloy, and Brvan. with Mrs Brereton next. Mrs Priest won the wandering shilling. Entertainers for the evening were Mesdames Dalzell and- Nestor. The social half-hour prizes were won by Mrs Coleman and Miss P. Brereton. Hostesses were Mesdames Guenole and W. Brereton.
Carrying supplies of petrol and general goods for the people of South Westland, the Nile left Greymouth last night. The boat is under charter to the South Westland Shipping Coy., and the Shell Coy.
The Greymouth Health Inspector (Mr G. Daniels), was advised by telegram yesterday that all restrictions on children attending picture thontrPß had been lifter!
