SMUTS SEEKS BIG PARTY FUND FOR ELECTION CAMPAIGN
(Rec. 10.0) CAPETOWN, Sept. 5 General Smuts launched an appeal for the United Party for five hundred thousand sterling as a “fighting fund,” which, he said, would be used to strengthen counsels of moderation for which the party stood. He predicted that the Malan Government would shortly go to the country in an attempt to increase it precarious majority: He said: “The Nationalists, at present, are using soft words, but there is no doubt that, behind it all they mean business —and intend riding roughshod over the constitution in carrying out their policy.”
