QUEEN WILHELMINA RELINQUISHES THRONE OF NETHERLANDS

(Rec. 8.4 G) AMSTERDAM, Sept. 4 Queen Wilhelmina, relinquished the throne to her daughter, and became Her Royal Highness, Princess of the Netherlands. The signing of the abdication was attended by Queen Juliana, her husband, Prince Bernahard, Cabinet Ministers, members of delegations from Indonesia, and the Dutch West Indies. Following the singing, Queen Wilhelmina said good-bye from the Palace balcony to the thousands massed below. She will make one more public appearance ,at the investiture of Queen Juliana on September 6 and then pass from public life. The first proclamation signed “Juliana, Queen of the Netherlands,” was read from the balcony of the Palace by Queen Juliana herself. She told Indonesians: “I trust that in my reign our new relationship will find a harmonious form,-which fits that which is living and growing in your midst.” Queen Juliana made her first triumphal tour of Amsterdam after the balcony ceremony. She rode in a cream, open coach, drawn by six horses. More people than ever before in the jubilee week, crowded the streets along the eight-mile route of the procession, cheering the new Queen. Prince Bernhard sat beside her. Much of the procession was through the Communist quarters of the city.
