MAN KILLED IN TAINUI STREET BY MOTOR-CAR
A fatal accident occurred on Saturday evening is Tainui Street in the vicinity of the Opera House. Mr George Gray, aged 77, of 23 Alexander Street, was knocked down by a motor-car when he was crossing the street from the Opera House. The accident occurred about 8.45 p.m. The injured man was attended by a member of the St. John Ambulance, who saw the accident, and then rushed to hospital. He was dead, however, having suffered head injuries. The driver of the car was Mr Phillip D. James, 18, of 5 Ida Street. He was returning from the Reefton races with eight passengers at the time of the accident. Mr Gray, who had been associated with the Salvation Army Corps here for 25 years, was a keen bandsman. In his earlier' days he was employed by the New Zealand Railways, and formerly resided at Lawrence, Otago, and also at Baclutha. In the Salvation Army here he had been Secretary until recently. He had worked until a few years ago on the Greymouth wharf. He had latterly been in failing health.. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Harry (Christchurch), and Leslie (Greymouth), and three daughters Mesdames Cooper (Hawkes” Bay), G. Patterson (Nelson), and D. Ellery (Greymouth). An inquest was opened and adjourned last night, when formal evidence of identification was given by Mr Leslie Gray.
