Japanese War Plan In Australia

SYDNEY, Sept. 1. In evidence before the Northern Territory Compensation Board, Brigadier E. M. Dollery, commandant of the military forces in Tasmania, said that a plan existed in 1944 foi' a military drive from Darwin through Timor to Japan. He was in charge of administration in the Northern Territory force from June, "1943, to May, 1945. Brigadier Dollery said that 50,000 British and Australian troops were to have taken part in the drive, for which 40 new camps were built which were never afterwards used. “The plan was dropped because of General MacArthur’s successful island campaign,” he added. “His drive went so fast that there was no need for ours.” The English-controlled meat company, Vesteys, is asking the board to determine the compensation in, rental due for the occupation of its Darwin meat works from March, 1942, to May, 1947, by armed forces. The company is clamiing £45,000 yearly for the term of occupation.
