(Rec. 10.0) " LONDON, Sept. 3 The General Council: of the British Trades Union Congress' has decided to maintain its support for the Government’s freezing wages, prices and profits, the Council believing that it contains safeguards that are vital to tne workers’ interests. A decision to put a brake on new wage claims was made after hearing a grim report from the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Stafford Cripps on the country’s economic position. Observers believe that the I-U-C. Congress, next week, will endorse the Council’s decision although opposition from many delegates is expected.

Twenty-two of the world’s main trading nations who are meeting to apply the Geneva tariffs and trade treaty, faced a serious crisis when South Africa threatened to withdraw from the trade treaty, unless a coinpromise was reached on the IndiaPakistan boycott of South African trade. The meeting side-stepped a formal South African proposal, which would have outlawed the boycott and appealed to South Africa to sign Hie protocol, which provides that any country may withhold, "the mostfavoured nation treatment” from another nation as provided in the treaty. t . South Africa considers the protocol is legally invalid.
