N.Z. DELEGATION TO U.N.O. ASSEMBLY

Prime Minister’s Announcement F.A. WELLINGTON, Sept 3. Mr James Thorn, the New Zealand High Commissioner in Canada, and New Zealand’s representative on the U.N.O. Economic and Social Council, will lead the New Zealand delegation at the opening stages of the General Assembly of U.N.0., which begins in Paris on September 21, stated the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, tonight.' The other delegates from New Zealand will be Messrs A. D. McIntosh and J. V. Wilson, of the .Internal Affairs Department, and the woman representative will be Mrs A. M. Newlands, of Timaru. Mr Fraser added that he proposed to go on to the U.N.O. Assembly after the Prime Ministers’ meeting in London, and that he would then lead the delegation for the remainder of the meeting. He hoped that the members of Parliament who would be attending the Empire Parliamentary Association Conference in London, Messrs Connolly. Sullivan and Roy, would also be able to join the New Zealand delegation at some stage. Those members, from both sides of the House, for whom such arrangements could be made, would, he hoped, be attached to the New Zealand representatives on various committees of the General Assembly, and this would enable them to be given an opportunity to observe and particinate in the work or the conference. Mrs Newlands, who is a resident gf Timaru, has taken an active part in public affairs in South Canterbury. She is a member of the South Canterbury Hospital Board; chairwoman of the Timaru Civilian Housing committee and executive member of the Timaru branch of the National Council of Churches and also of the Marriage Guidance Council and is a member of the National Council of Women. She has -been a Justice ol the Peace since October 30, 1936. She stood for the Ashburton seat at last election. .
