BEEF CHEAPER, SHEEP AND PIGS FIRM AT ADDINGTON
YESTERDAY'S SALE CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 1. Prices of sheep, both fat and store, were firm, and pigs were dearer, while beef was easier at to-day’s Addington Market. Store sheep: The entry was 2354. comprising 876 hoggets, 393 ewes and lambs, 617 ewes, and 468 wethers. Most of the hoggets were shorn, The prices remained on a par with last week’s lower rates, under slow competition. The best price for ewe hoggets was 48s 6d for 83 well-wooled half-breds. Eighty three-quarter-breds from Marlborough made 41s 6d, and a truck lot of Romneys 40s. Shorn ewe hoggets sold at 31s to 375. Best wether hoggets sold at 28s 5d to 34s 9d. Ewes, in lamb, met a sustained demand, and prices remained firm. A small lot of sound-mouthed Romneys made 55s and a line of 142 half-breds 50s. Both lots were in , lamb to Southdown and English' Leicester rams. Useful lines made 34s to 375, and others 24s io 28s.
The ewes and lambs were a mixed lot. Prices showed little change. A good lot of 49 Corriedales, with “2 down-cross lambs, made 30s. and others 25s 9d to' 27s 7d, all counted. Some useful wethers were offered. Part of a line of 250 made 50s. A station line sold at 34s 6d to 37s 6d, and a truck load of 2-tooths at 35s 7d. There were 33 spring lambs offered, but they were not as well grown as at earlier sales, and the prices eased The best made to 52s Id, good 47s Id to 48s Id, medium 40s to 45s Id. Fat hoggets: The entry was 479 head. The quality was good. Prices were about Is better than last- week. Values were: Extra prime fat hoggets to 70s; prime 50s to 58s; good 41s to 475; medium 35s to 38s; light 30s to 335.
Fat sheep: The entry was 2600 head. Quality was good,- but not up to that of recent sales. More than half the yarding comprised shorn sheep. The sale was very erratic, bet over-all prices were about 2s higher than Jast week. The shorn sheep were about 5s cheaper than the sheep in wool. Values (sheep shorn unless otherwise stated) were: Extra prime woolly wethers to 79s Id; extra prime wethers to 74s Id; prime heavy 62s to 68s; prime medium-weight 55s to 60s; ordinary 48s to 535; light and unfinished 40s to 465; prime woolly ewes to 72s Id; prime heavy ewes to 61s Id; prime 42s to 48s; medium 36s to 40s; ordinary 31s to 355; light and unfinished 22s to 295. Fat cattie: There was an entry of 646 head, including a good selection of prime steers and heifers. The full supply caused a slight easing in the competition. The values all-round were about 20s lower. Best beef made up to 77s 6d per 1001 b; good beef 57s 6d to 62's 6o; medium 50s to 555; best cow to 60s; secondary to 47s 6d. Values were:—Extra prime heavy steers up to £33 17s 6d; prime heavy £27 to £29; prime mediumweight £22 to £26; ordinary and light £l6 to £2l; extra prime heifers to £29 12s 6d; prime £l7 to £2l; ordinary and light £l3 to £l6; extra prime cows to £25 12s 6d; prime £l5 to £l9; ordinary and light £8 to £l3. Porker: The yarding was smaller than last week, and values were firm throughout, at an advance of 3s to 4s. Choppers were yarded in medium numbers' and the sale was better at nrices £1 to £1 10s above last week. Baconers were forward in medium numbers, and values showed little change. Values were: Light porkers £3 14s 6d to £4 2s 6d; medium £4 6s 6d to £4 19s 6d; heavy £5 7s 6d to £6 7s 6d; choppers £6 6s to £l4 6s; light baconers £6 9s 6d to £6 15s 6d; medium £6 17s 6d to £7 Is 6d; heavy £7 2s 6d to £7 8s 6d; extra heavy £7 9s 6d to £7 17s 6d. The average per lb was 10-id to 10®d.
