Russian Society Relieves N.S.W. Labour M’s.P. Of Position
SYDNEY, Aug. 31. The New South Wales Minister of Housing (Mr Clive Evatt) has been relieved of the presidency of tne Australian Russian Society after the decision by the State executive of the Australian Labour Party that the society fs a Communist auxiliary. This was stated to-day by executive members of the society. Mr E. J. Ward, Federal Minister of Transport ' and Ml’ R. A. King, a member of the Legislative Council, have been relieved of their positions as vice-presidents. “The decision is made out of respect to these gentlemen and out of gratitude for their services to the Soviet and to the cause, of world peace,” says a statement by the society. “It terminates all association between them and the society.” The council of the United Associations of Women has asked the New South Wales Chief Secretary (Mr J. M. Baddeley) to conduct an investigation into its affairs after an allegation by the Labour Party executive that it' is (an alleged subversive political body.” '
