RUGBY FOOTBALL WEST COAST UNION MEETING

ASSISTANCE FOR LEPER FUND At the ijsual meeting of the West Coast Rugby Union Management Committee last evening there .were present: Messrs F. Baillie (chair), R. Bunt, B. Watkin-, W. Preston, S. McDonnell, M. Jamieson, J. Jackson, J. Shannon, W. Williams, A. Agnew, and O. Scott (secretary). Advice was received of E. G. Walker’s selection for the South Island Trial. ’ ' It was decided ,to apply to the Railway’s Department for a special train from Hokitika to Westport for the Seddon Shield game, and also for the All Black Trial match at Christchurch. , In view of the state of the second senior competition, the Kiwi team was granted permission to travel to South Westland on Saturday. It was however, decided to advise the Kiwi Club that permission must first be obtained from the Union before friendly games are arranged. It was decided to play the Graham Wise Cup match at Kumara, subject to' inspection of the ground at KumIt was decided to withdraw the Greymouth challenge for the Dittman Shield on September 11. Tt was resolved to that the Union should donate the gate money on September 11 to the Leper Fund a special match, Greymouth Reps, v, The Rest to be arranged for the occasion. t It was decided to write to Mr M. Galbraith and congratulate him on his report and to thank him for the way he managed the West Coast Schoolboys at the recent Seddon Shield games at Motueka. It was decided to write to the Auckland and Taranaki Unions for rep. games on the Coast next year. Delegates from all Clubs were asked to attend a special meeting at Mr A. Agnew’s shop on Wednesday week at 7.30 p.m. A gift of a miniature shield .was received for the most promising plaver in the lower grades. FIXTURES The following are the fixtures for Saturday:— Senior Cup Final:— Star v Excelsior (cup final and second competition) Park No. 1, 3 p.m. (Lindbom); Celtic v Blaketown, Park No. 2, 3 p.m. (Fong); St. Mary's v United,' Park No. 1, 1.30 p.m. (Bunt); Cobden and Kiwi, byes. Junior:— Tech. O.B; v Tech. (Christchurch), Tech. Ground, 1.30 p.m. (Thorburn); Cobden v Magpies, Park No. 2, 1.30 p.m. (Hogarth); Celtic v Pirates, Kumara, 3 p.m, (Ferguson). Third Grade representative match; — West Coast. v Canterbury, . at Christchurch. Fourth Grade rep. match:— West Coast v Ikamatua, at Ikainatua. 1 Fifth Grade:— (Friday): Star v Sydenham, ParkNo. 1, 11' a.m. (Agnew). Saturday): Star v Cobden, Park No. 1 10 a.m. (Agnew); Hokitika v Tech. Park No. 2, 11 a.m. (Hamilton ). Sixth Grade: — Tech, v Star, Park No. 2, 10 a.m. (Hamilton); Blaketown v Celtic, Tech. Ground, 11 a.m. (Johnson); United, a bye. Seventh Grade: — Celtic v Cobden, Blaketown, 11 a.m. (Fong); Star v Blaketown. Blaketown, 9 a,m. ‘Olsen). Eighth Grade:— Cobden v Celtic, Blaketown, 10 a.m. (Olsen); Star v Blaketown, 10.30 a.m. (King).

Westland Sub-Union At the meeting of the Westland Rugby Football Sub-Union on Monday evening, the following matches were arranged for Saturday:— Senior grade: Excelsiors v. Star, at Greymouth (cup final). Kiwis v. Si. Mary’s, at Hokitika, 2.45 p.m. The ’-Kiwi team desired to travel to Wataroa, and were unable to play a fixture on Saturday. The Sub-Union resolved to notify the West Coast Union that Kiwis would be unable to play, and ask that if possible a match be set down for St. Mary’s at Hokitika with one of the Greymouth teams. The Graham Cup match, Pirates v. Celtic, was set down to be played at Kumara on Saturday, th? Sub-Union to inquire from the West, Coast Union if the ground at Kumara would be in order, and marked out ready for the match. The Hokitika League Club advised that they would interest as many members as possible in the first-aid classes.

The West Coast Union asked ihe Sub-Union to consider the playing ol the senior cup final at Greymouth on Saturday, and to count the match for the Graham Wise Cup and the one round knock-out competition. Members agreed to the request, but several members pointed out that the West Coast Union sought the permission of the donor as to the playing of the match at Greymouth, when the rules made the position clear. Members agreed that the West Coast Union should have contacted the Excelsior Club and the Sub-Union first The West Coast Union is to be advised that the club required expense.-; paid to Greymouth, and also to ask that consideration be given to the appointment of Mr A. Fong to control the match. White Star Club, of Westport, is to be offered Saturday, September 25, for the match with the Hokitika third graders at Cass Square. West Coast Union forwarded a challenge for the Dittman Shield for Saturday, September 11. It was decided to inform the West Coast Union that the date was not suitable, and to offer Saturday, September 25. Mr Kelly said many of the senior players intended travelling to Christchurch for the trial match, and he suggested that the Sub-Union endeavour to arrange the return mate!!, Westland v. Albion, at .Christchurch on September 11. The recommendation was adopted, the secretary to contact Albion Club immediately. Mr F. West recommended the SubUnion to make application to the Railways Department to have the regular goods train delayed to leave Greymouth after the arrival of the 10.40 p.m. train at Greymouth from Hokitika on Friday, September 10. Many people were anxious to go to Christchurch for the trial match, andij this would be the only opportunity. The recommendation was adopted. It was decided to ask the West Coast Union to endeavour to arrange a special train from Hokitika to Westport on the date of the Coast v. Buller Seddon Shield match. The secretary submitted a progress report on the Southland-Coast match. Members voiced their disapproval of the system used for the provision of programmes for the match. Mr Algar said that the programmes for the match were provided by the Celtic Club, of Greymouth, by arrangement with the West Coast Union. The secretary said that the West Coast Union permitted the Sub-Union to arrange the match, but reserved tlm right of certain appointments, and unfortunately the programmes happened to be one. It would have been better to have permitted the Sub-Union to complete all the arrangements. Many people were definitely of the opinion that the programmes should not have been charged for, and the Sub-Union

agreed to bring the complaints before the West Coast Union. St. Mary’s juniors were granted permission to travel to Westport on September 4. The Sub-Union resolved to forward a letter of appreciation to Mr Thomas, of Hotel Empire, for treatment accorded to . the visiting Southland team. Merivale Club inquired as to the possibility of arranging a match in Hokitika for their fourth grade team on September’ 18. The club is to be notified that the date is not suitable, and to offer another date, consideration to be given to September 25. A number of remits were filed for submission to the next conference of the West Co.ast Union and Sub-Unions.
