U.S. Air Crash Due to Tornado

NEW YORK, August 30. The sheriff of St. Paul, Mr Henry Rhyner, said he believed a tornado hit the airliner which crashed near Winona, in Minnesota,, killing 36 occupants. He said eye-witness accounts indicated that the tornado was just starting to dip towards the earth when it struck the aircraft, smashing it against a ridge. Reports that a tornado hit the airliner were supported by Civil Aeronautics Administration inspector. He said the plane was probably thrown out of control by tornadic winds and “came apart at the seams”. Search parties have so far recovered 21 bodies of the 36 passengers and ’crew killed.
