U.S. Navy Alerted To Counter Hurricane

NEW YORK, August 30. The battleship Missouri, the aircraft carriers Mindoro' and Sicily, two cruisers and hundreds of military and navy planes fled to-night before a powerful hurricane which is expected to smash against the North Carolina coast with winds of 115 miles an hour about mid-night. Atlantic Fleet headquarters at Norfolk, Virginia, has ordered 47 naval ships to sea to ride rtjit the hurricane. Navy headquarters at Washington has issued to bases on the south and central Atlantic coast areas a condition 1 alert, requiring the immediate evacuation of all navy planes. A condition IT alert was issued to the northern bases, requiring the evacuation of all but essential planes.
