CUSTOMS FIGURES DECREASE BY £891

A decrease of £9lB in the total collected by tile Customs Department, is shown for August when compared with the same period last. year. Customs figures showed an increase of £72, beer, £241, sales tax, £517, but gold showed a decrease of £1768, and petrol tax, £166.

VITAL STATISTICS FOR GREYMOUTH There was one less birth in Greymouth in August, compared with tbe same period in 1947, and two more deaths. Marriage notices decreased by two, and marriage by the Registrar were two against none in 1947.

CHILDREN BANNED FROM GREYMOUTH PICTURE THEATRES No children under 16 years of age are permitted to attend the Greymouth theatres until further notice. The ban has been imposed by the district medical officer of health at Christchurch (Dr J. H. Blakelock), as a precautionary measure following the admittance of a 15-year-old Greymouth boy with infantile paralysis. Theatre staffs were notified by the respective managers yesterday afternoon not to admit children. The boy in question, was a member of the West Coast Rugby League Schoolboys’ representative team, and became ill on Monday. Other members of the team which returned to Greymouth on Tuesday are warned that if they feel ill or develop symptoms suggesting influenza, they must call a doctor immediately. No objections have been raised by the health authorities to the continuance of schoolboy football games. A Canterbury Rugby League schoolboys’ team will arrive in Greymouth tomorrow. and unless there is a further instruction the programme will be adhered to.
