Question of Use Of Section Raised In Parliament

P.A. ’ WELLINGTON, Aug. 31 The second week of the budget debate began quietly in the House of Representatives, this afternoon, after the formal business. Mr S. W. Smith (Nat.,. Hobson), gave notice to ask the Minister of Lands if it was correct that a house section in the Tamaki district, drawn by a returned soldiei’ who subsequently found he did not want it, was not then offered to another returned soldier. “Was a member of Parliament, who is not a returned soldier, allowed to have the section, and is it the Government’s policy not to give another returned man in a ballot the first chance in the case of a withdrawal by a successful applicant?” he asked. “Did the Minister instruct the Commissioner of Crown Lands that a member of Parliament should have preference over a returned soldier.” Mr R. G. Gerard (Nat., Ashburton): “That’s a skinner!”
