Grey River dredge won 308.7 ozs. of gold in the fortnight ending August 25, from 132,668 yards of material secured in 250 J hours dredging. Atarau" dredge secured 45 ozs. for the week ending August 28 from 25,656 yards of' material secured in 101 dredging hours. Clutha dredge securde 92 ozs. for the week ending August 27 in 110 dredging hours. Mr A. Roberts, F.S.M.C., England, representing Procter’s, Opticians, (since 1877), Christchurch, arrives in Westport to-day on a professional visit. —Advt. The staffc of the Australian Rationing Commission has been reduced from 827 to 310, and is to be further cut to 260, following the ending of meat and clothes rationing. The new level is regarded as the minimum essential to cover tea and butter rationing in all States. About half of those affected by the- reduction have been transferred to other departments. The North Island last week used 21,085,000 more units of electricity last week than the South Island, exceeding its allocation of 32,356,000 units by 2,385,000 units. South Island consumers used 127,000 units less than their allocation of 13,683,000 units. Mr C. W. Fyfe, assist-ant-Director-General of Commonwealth Social Services, and Mr. H. J. Goodes, assistant-Secretary of the Treasury-, arrived ‘ at Auckland by 'plane from Sydney to join in investigations of social services as between New Zealand and Australia, along with the Commonwealth Director of Social Services, Mr. F. H. Rowe, who is already in the Dominion, for official discussions. “Certain principles were discussed at the Dominions’ conference in London last year and our mission can be regarded as one of the first fruits of the conference,” Mr. Ffye said. Asked to what extent “free medicine” was included in the Australian social services, Mr. .Fyfe said, smilingly: “I prefer not to comment on that.” Conversation between two housewives recently overheard in Greymouth: “John said when things got back to normal he would buy me a washing machine, but I told him I would never go back to doing my own washing, even with a washing machine, as I was more than satisfied with the Westland Laundry. I’d sooner put the money towards something else.” Second housewife: “Yes, they do the clothes up beautifully and it’s a reasonable service, too. I sent my blankets last week and they are wonderful.
