N.Z. MODEL PLANE IN 2nd PLACE NEW YOFK, August 30 New Zealand was second in the international Wakeneici trophy contest for moder aeroplanes, which was won oy Britain tor me sixth time. Britain’s entry new an average time of 387.3 seconds on three flights. The New Zealand entry, which'was flown by American proxy, was owned by Mr B. B. Marsh. It had the second nest average time of 352.5 seconds. OLD SHIP SINKS IN THAMES LONDON, August 30 The noted wooden training ship, H.M.S. Worcester, which.was launched 115 years ago, heeled over and sank in the Thames when her ballast shifted at her moorings at Grays, Essex; The Admiralty earlier in 1948 sold the Worcester to the shipbreakers. Three of the shipbreakers’ staff were aboard when the ship canted, and a barge rescued them from the rigging. DUTCH QUEEN ACCLAIMED . NO RETURN CHANNEL SWIM LONDON, August 30 Tom Blower, who planned to swim the channel both ways, abandoned the return swim on medical advice, after coming ashore at Cap Gris Nez, says Reuter’s Boulogne correspondent. Blower looked in good shape, but the doctor said his heart was too slow. Blower swam the channel in 15 hours 31 minutes, breaking Temmes’s record from England to France by 23 minutes.
