ANTI-WESTERN MANIFESTO AT WARSAW

By Congress Of Intellectuals On Peace (Rec. 9.5). LONDON, August 28. The Warsaw “World Congress of Intellectuals”, issued a manifesto condemning what it termed “a handful of self-interested men in America and Europe who have adopted a Fascist method of solving all problems by force of arms, once again making an attempt against spiritual treasures of the people’s world”. The Associated Press says: Only a few delegates refused to sign this manifesto, which proposed a worldwide peace propaganda campaign with national, cultural and peace congresses convened in all countries, and a strengthening of international ties between cultured men of all countries. Thirty-five thousand Polish workers and students carried banners denouncing “Wall Street imperialism , and wildly cheered the issue of’ the manifesto. „ At the congress, Professor J. B. S. Haldane (Britain) claimed that the main danger of war came from America under a situation where the police refuse protection from a small minority pressure group. OTHER VIEWS

Dr Julian Huxley said: Nearly everything at the congress has been destructive, and little, if- anything, has been constructive. The Russian attacks on British and American culture are the kind of talk which lead to war”. f Dr Bryn Hoyde, director of the new School of Research, New York, at the Congress of Intellectuals, accused Russia’s delegates of irresponsible warmongering. Dr Hoyde said: “The Russians are assuming the probability, if not the actual existence, of war between the United States and Russia Every thoughtful American bitterly resents the Soviet system of excluding the Russian people from forming associations with the outside world . Dr Hoyde added that, as for imperialism, the Russians do not take a back seat to anyone in demanding their own way in the world. ~ , '. , He proposed an eight-point programme for the promotion of peace by the world's intellectuals which included freedom for human beings to seek and express the truth, rights of personal freedom, and self-govern-ment.
