ANGLICAN LEADER ON WORLD POLITICS

LONDON, August 8. The Archbishop of York, Dr. Garbett, preaching at the closing service of the Lambeth Conference at Westminster Abbey, declared that this was the hour of crisis. “With the discovery of the atomic bomb, we live more nearly in the spiritual atmosphere of the first Christians, who expected, at any time the end of the world,” he said. “Before it is too late we must preach the Gospel.” The central truth of the Christian faith was the only and> complete answer to man’s cry for light and deliverance. The modern growth of the power of the State threatened the Church’s spiritual freedom. Only a united Church could stand firm against Islam, Hinduism and Communism. “How can we expect the nations to take seriously the Church’s appeal for peace when Christians are unable to meet together,” he concluded.
