Military Defaulter’s Penalty After Six Years

WANGANUI, Aug. 9. Six years ago, Donald James Morrell, aged 29, was sent to a defaulters’ detention camp at Hauttu for failing to report for military service, and within a few weeks he escaped. Three years later he was arrested at Hamilton, but broke out of the police lock-up after three days. He was not seen again until last week, when he was arrested in Wanganui. When arrested he commented: “I thought I was clear of all that business.” This morning he was convicted and discharged on a charge of escaping from the detention camp, but Mr J. H. Salmon S.M. sent him to prison for one month for escaping from custody at Hamilton. “The defendant is" fortunate that the defaulters detention camps have been abolished,” said the Magistrate.
