HOCKEY Australia v. N.Z.
DUNEDIN, Aug. 8. Australia beat New Zealand three goals to two, at Carisbrook. They led three goals to one at half-time. New Zealand rallied in the second spell. Siggs and Pointon defended grandly for Australia; Dick and Browne were outstanding in the forwards. Peacock played finely in the New Zealand halves, while Thomas led the forwards cleverly, though there was little to choose in an even eleven. The teams were:— Australia.—J. Pointon; K. Thornton, D. Siggs; R. Hancock, C. M. Morley, D. Wise; H. Josiffe, D. Cooper, F. Browne, I. Dick, A. Schulte. New Zealand.—R. Jenkin; J. S. B. Buchan, B. W. Bedford; J. Tynan, C. V. Walter, B. Peacock; P. L. Cassin, L. Roderick, T. Thomas, J. Reece, I. Wyatt. Cooper (2) and Browne scored for Australia and Thomas for New Zealand.
Australians v. South Canterbury P.A. TIMARU. August 9. The visit’ng Australian hockey team beat South Canterbury by three goals to one to-day. Superior stick work and positional play gave the visitors an advantage, which stood to them in stemming resolute play of the local team. B. Salisbury, A Schulte, and A. Barnes scored for the Australians, and J. Buchanan for South- Canterbury. _______________
