BLACKBALL NOTES
[Our ow-n Correspondent]
Three young ladies who recently arrived in the Dominion from the Gid Country, were visitors to Bla SH^ al * last Saturday. They were Misses Meikle (2) and Crewe. Mr D. Rhodes, of Greymouth, is at present in Blackball painting the scenery for the forthcoming entertainment of the Concert Party which is being put on here during Septemb<Mrs D. Kidd, Main Road, is spending a holiday with her daughter, Mrs M. Doola’n at Atarau. Mrs C. Brown, Main Road, has gone to Timaru, owing to an illness in the family. Mr Geo Williamson, of Timaru, who has been visiting Mr and Mrs F. Beale, Hinton Street, has left on his return. , Mr Neil Haisty, Hinton Street, met with an accident the other day while working in the State sawmill, where a heavy beam fell on his arm, fracturing it. „ , . Mr John Meikle, Clifford Street, is laid up at present as a consequence of an injury received to his left foot while at work on the Ngahere dredge. Mr Geo. Lindley. Roa Road, is an inmate of Grey Hospital, owing to an injury received in the course of his employment in Blackball State mine. ' I am pleased to report that Mr R. Mountford, Main Road, has resumed work, after a lengthy illness. The death of Mrs Turk (late of Blackball) at the home of her son and daughter-in-law-, Mr and Mrs C. Turk, in Spreydon, the other day, at the advanced age of 83 years, removed yet another member of the pioneer families of this mining village. She was of a quiet, unassuming nature and always ready to lend a helping hand when it was required, and was highly esteemed during her long residence in Blackball. Her passing is deeply regretted by her wide circle of friends. Her husband predeceased her a year ago. To her family and relatives the sympathy of the Blackball people is extended. During his visit to the West Coast League Centre, a few days ago, Mr Redwood of Auckland, accompanied by Mr Nolan, paid a short visit to this tow-nship. They were shown the sights by Mr B. F. Connors (West Coast League President). Mr Redwood, I understand, was high in his praise of the playing area on our domain, and reckoned it compared favourably with other country doma’ns in New Zealand. The Domain Board held its monthly meeting at the Miners’ Union x office last Sunday morning, Mr 'R. Mountford presiding over a good attendance. Also present were Mr and Mrs E. Pascoe, representing the Cricket Club and Basketball Club respectively. It was decided to hold a bazaar towards the end of November, dates to be advertised. The ladies who intend running an afternoon tea kiosk reported they were ready to launch the project, and it would begin on Sunday afternoon. The Bazaar Committee reported they would meet during the week and get things moving. A letter was received from the secretary - of the Cricket Club requesting the board to close the playing area against football as from September 26, so that they would have time to resoil and resow- the cricket pitch before the season set in. This was agreed to, as the said date marks the end of the active football season.
