CRICKET HAMPSHIRE 62 AHEAD OF AUSTRALIANS ON FIRST INNINGS
VISITORS BAT ON "STICKY DOG” WICKET
LONDON, June 3. In their first innings m reply to Hampshire’s total of 1/9, the Australians scored only 117. 'they were, all at sea to-day on a “sticky ciog” pitch. They lost eight wickets for 63 runs in 80 minutes. The ball skidded, kicked and turned unpredictabiy alter the heavy rain last night, ano alternating sunshine and showers this morning. Miller's 39 was the one bright spot in the Australian innings. As a measure of the amount of spin that the wicket took, Knott, the rightarm off-spinner, who took rive wickets for 57, had to bowl round the wicket to prevent the ball spinning too far from the bat. The Australian Associated Press correspondent says: After calamities befel them on an unpredictable raindamaged wicket, the Australians will face the last day’s play against Hampshire to-morrow with a contidence which many who watched the display to-day share. The Australians’ innings was a repetition of the match against Yorkshire exactly a month ago when* the team, on a sticky wicket, came within inches of defeat. Hampshire, now 83 . runs ahead, will be in a strong position if, as the forecast indicates, to-morrow’s weather is similar to to-day’s, and they go for quick runs regardless of the consequences. A hailstorm just before lunch prevented any further play. Scores:— HAMPSHIRE (Ist Innings) Arnold, b Loxton 48 Rogers, c Barbes, bW.
