HIGH CIVIL SERVANT PURGED IN ENGLAND AS COMMUNIST
IN.Z.P.A. Reuter Cable]
(Rec. 9 30). LONDON, June 4. The General Secretary of the Civil Service Clerical Association stated that Mr E. Hicks, who ended the presidency of the Civil Service Clerical Association last week has been “purged by the Air Ministry and sent on special leave pending his reoly to an allegation that he is a member of the Communist Party.
The Air Ministry has known for several months that Hicks was a member of the Communist Party, and the fact that action was delayed until his removal from the Association presidency is regarded as significant, supporting a growing belief that the scope of the Civil service purge is being extended beyond that which Mr Attlee stated, and is applying to all posts in Service Ministries filled by members and associates of the Communist Party.” Hicks is employed as a high clerical officer in the Contracts Department.
