U.N.O. Economic Commission for Asia
LONDON, June 1.
Reuter’s correspondent at Ottacamund, jn Madras, says that the Prime Minister of India, Pandit Nehru, at the opening session of the United Nations Economic Commission for' Asia, at which Australia and New Zealand are represented, reaffirmed India’s faith in the ideals of the United Nations.
“Although so far the United Nations has achieved no tangible results in the political field, they are sure to come sooner or later”, said Pandit Nehru. “The economic aspect is at least as important, if not more important. Success in. economic fields will bring success in "the political field”. He said it was the duty of the countries able to do so to assist the countries of Asia with capital equipment and technical assistance —in their own interests —but no Asiatic country would welcome such aid with.'' any attached condition leading toeconomic subjugation. • Pandit Nehru particularly welcomed New Zealand and Burma, as new; members. He added that he wouldhave liked to have seen direct representatives of Indonesia there. An area like the Indonesian Republic, one of the richest in Asia, obviously could, not be ignored in any plan.
