PALMERSTON NORTH, June 3. William Hemopo, married, market garden labourer, of Opiki, was fined £2, costs 17s, in the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North on a -charge of permitting his 13-year-old daughter to be employed during school hours. Arising from the same circumstances, Beniamin A. Newnham, market ga - ■ dener, Fitzherbert West, was charged with employing a child during school hours. This charge was dismissed by Mr Herd. S.M, Mr P. M. Gordon raised the defence that as onion-picking work on Newnham’s farm had been on a contract basis, his client was not the employer. Newnham, in evidence, denied all knowledge of the girl’s presence on the farm._____
