Watersiders Supervise Own Labour: Result “Extremely Pleasing”

AUCKLAND, Juno 3. Under a cost-plus contract with the Tasman Shipping Company to unload the island cargo of the motoi vessel Viti. the Auckland branch of cho Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union is supervising its own labour. This is an experiment in the policy advocated by the New Zealand union for nearly a quarter of a century. This is the first instance, except an isolated case many years ago, of watersiders directly contracting to handle a ship’s cargo. The owners of the Viti say they are “extremely pleased” with the experiment. The union maintains that the system on a broad scale would eliminate labour troubles. The Viti, which has been bought from the Government of Fiji, is to be converted for the Tasman trade.
