LAW AMENDMENTS 9 The new rugby amendments which came -into force throughout New Zealand last week-end, will be observed for the first time on the West Coast when the competitions recommence on Saturday. Some of the main features of the amendments will include the following:— (1) When the referee caniiot decide which team first grounded the ball in in-goal a scrummage shall be formed five- yards from the goal-line opposite the place when the ball was grounded. (2) A fair catch is obtained when a player catches the ball direct from a kick, a knock-on or throw forward by an opposing player if at thd same time the catcher makes a mark on the ground with his heel and exclaims “Mark!” (3) The far foot of the second player of each front row on the side on which the ball is being put in and the feet of the player, beyond may be raised and advanced as soon as the ball has left the hands of the player putting it in. The outside foot of the first player of each row on the side on which the ball is being put in shall be permitted to follow the ball into the scrummage, but shall not/touch it until it has been touched by one of the first-mention-ed feet. No other foot may be raised or advanced until the ball has been touched by one of these same first-mentioned feet.
