MORE THAN 8400 STATE HOUSES FOR N.Z. EX-SERVICEMEN

P.A. WELLINGTON, June 2. Another 159 ex-servicemen obtained State house tenancies during April. This brought the number of allocated houses up to the end of that month to 8401. The following are the district allocations to ex-ser-vicemen as at the end of April, with those for April itself shown in parenthesis: — Auckland and North Auckland 2462 (35) - zes Waikato and Bay of Plenty 644 (5). Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay 361 (10). Taranaki 242 (2). Wellington province (including Palmerston North, Wanganui and Masterton) 2972' (60). Nelson, Marlborough and Westland 198 (9). Canterbury province 877 (29). Otago province 466 (8). Southland 179 (1).

Totals: 84.01 (159). More than £50,000,000 have been authorised in Rehabilitation loans to ex-servicemen and women. . The latest figures, as at. the end of the Apri. show that 62,255 applicants haye been granted loans amounting in value to £50,522,400. The total outlay on rehabilitation, at the same date, was more than £67,000,000. During April, there were 1476 fresh authorisation, tdtialling in value £1,161,481. FARM SETTLEMENT With 78 farm loans in April, the total under that head was brought to 4794, valued at £19,601,348. Phis included 578 men settled under the Land Settlement Scheme. Another 257 ex-servicemen were granted loans to build, and 240 to purchase homes during . April, the total value of these being £369,015 and £266,373 respectively. Altogether, at the end of April, about 34,000 ex-servicemen had received direct housing assistance m some form, through the Rehabilitation Board. Apart from those included above is a considerable number of Maori ex-servicemen who have been assisted through the Maori Rejiaoitation Finance Committee, .and undex the Native Land and Housing Acts.
