DR. DALTON’S NEW RESPONSIBILITIES
LONDON, June 1. The new Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Dr Hugh Dalton, mavbe thn man chosen to knit together British policy in Western. Europe with Commonwealth obligations, according to Reuter’s political correspondent. Informed quarters point to the urgent need to co-ordinate British relations with Western Union and the Commonwealth. Dr Dalton, if given the task, would emerge as the dominating figure in the nlans for an early Commonwealth conference. Presurnablv he would share with Mr P. J. Noel-Baker the role of chief British spokesman after the Prime Minister, Mt* Attlee. The Chancellorship of the Duchv pf Lancaster is a sinecure ministerial office, which is often an ‘“umbrella” for other important Cabinet duties.
